Pager & paging system
Pagers are miniature receivers which receive data transmissions from at least one paging terminal which covers a selected geographic area. Communication systems in general, and paging systems in particular, have obtained wide spread use in today's society. In such paging systems, transmitted call signals are used to call selected receivers for the purpose of transmitting information from a base station to the selected receivers. A pager system is a communications system used to contact a person who may be away from a telephone and whose whereabouts may be unknown. Pagers are typically carried by users who wish or need to receive communications when they are away from a telephone or computer, or are unable to predict where they may be reached at a given time. Paging systems include a central paging terminal that is connected to various transmitters. Each transmitter sends a paging signal that addresses a particular pager and that can be received by that pager if that pager is located within the radio coverage range of the transmitter. A pager is generally tuned to a particular tone or data bit-modulated frequency that is shared with many other pagers. When a subscriber subscribes to a paging service, the subscriber is assigned a personal identification number (PIN). The PIN number is used by people sending paging messages to identify the subscriber to whom the message is to be sent. With one-way communication, the user may receive an audible or vibratory indication that someone is trying to reach him or her. Some pagers also allow for messaging so that the user may receive an actual phone number or even a text message. Two-way pagers allow the pager user to send communications to other parties. Depending on the complexity of the pager, the paging device may receive a voice or data message following the alert, or the alert alone may simply indicate to the user that a call was made and a prearranged action should be taken. Modern paging systems employ receivers with multifunction capabilities through the use of microprocessors. These microprocessors allow the receivers to respond to information containing various combinations of tone, tone and voice, or data messages in a number of different modes. Pagers may illustratively have a group calling function whereby the same message is transmitted to a plurality of users carrying the same type of pagers. The function is convenient for a group of people communicating with one another through message transmissions.
