Vacuum fluorescent display (VFD)

A vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) is a type of flat panel display that utilizes thermal emission of electrons from a cathode also referred to as a VFD filament and phosphor excitation at a target anode to generate a color display. Generally, a vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) is a light-emitting display device wherein thermal electrons emitted from cathode filaments selectively land on a phosphor layer by way of a control electrode and an anode electrode to thereby produce light. Vacuum fluorescent displays typically include a matrix of anodes that comprise the pixels of the display and at least one filament cathode that is positioned adjacent to the matrix of anodes and parallel to the plane defined by the matrix. When the anodes and the control grids are at a high voltage and the filament is at a lower voltage the electrons can excite the phosphor layer on the anodes to cause light emission from the anodes. Vacuum fluorescent displays may be classified into various formats depending upon the structure, the display area, the display content, and the manner of driving. Particularly in view of the display area, the VFDs can be classified into a usual type, a front luminescent type, and a dual layer type. In view of the display content, the VFDs can be classified into a number display VFD, a character display type, and a graphic display VFD. A vacuum fluorescent display is capable of producing multi-colored images with a low voltage, and is well adapted to the semiconductor device appliances. The VFD has found a marketplace as a messaging display for equipment such as clocks, radios, tape players and CDs in automobiles. It is also found on appliances such as microwave ovens. Automotive vehicles often use vacuum fluorescent displays as instrumentation for providing vehicle speed and other information to the operator. The use of VFD devices in automotive vehicles has been widely adopted as a reliable and efficient means for providing display information in a crisp format suitable for reading in both day and night conditions.
