Digital media player

Media players operate to play media items for their user that are stored within the media players. Digital media players are a widely used form of audio reproduction. In the home, players that play CDs (compact discs) are widely used, and more recently DVD (digital versatile disc) players capable of playing CDs serve the joint function of video and audio playback. Consumer electronic devices such as portable CD players, DVD players and car receivers have widely varying capabilities in terms of media playback and user interface capabilities. Digital media players are becoming more popular these days. Of particular popularity are portable media players such as MP3 players or DVD players. The media contents are most commonly audio files but could also be video items (e.g., DVDs). Typically, an MP3 player will store various audio items internally on a storage disk. Media players, such as video players, are becoming increasingly popular in vehicles. Video players are used in conjunction with a conventional television or other display to present images for viewing within the vehicle. Due to recent advances in technology, computer users are now able to enjoy many features that provide an improved user experience, such as playing various media and multimedia content on their personal or laptop computers. For example, most computers today are able to play compact discs so users can listen to their favorite musical artists while working on their computers. Many computers are also equipped with digital versatile disc (DVD) drives enabling users to watch movies. Media players for such digital audio media must provide ways in which the user of the media player can navigate to (i.e., choose) a desired selection for reproduction.
