VoIP gateway

Internet telephony, also known as voice over Internet protocol (abbreviated as voice over IP, or VoIP), is provided to deliver real time, two-way, synchronous voice traffic over the Internet or corporate Intranets. Internet telephony, also known as voice over Internet protocol (abbreviated as voice over IP, or simply VoIP), is provided to deliver real time, two-way, synchronous voice traffic over the Internet or corporate Intranets. Using Voice over IP technology, phone systems can communicate with each other over existing TCP/IP data networks typically present between remote offices. This feature alone can eliminate the need for expensive, dedicated circuits between facilities. Voice over IP enables the management of voice and data over a single network. In the VoIP system, voice data can be sent and received via the IP network. In particular, the IP network and the PSTN are connected through a gateway. A gateway is a node on a local area network (LAN) that communicates with a terminal or other terminals that are attached to other networks. A gateway performs translation of the transmission formats between the terminals. In a VoIP network, a VoIP gateway device is provided between a switched telephone network and an IP network to perform protocol conversion. More specifically, the VoIP gateway device converts an IP packet stream received from the IP network to a data stream to be transmitted to the switched telephone network, and vice versa. Since a packet stream received from the IP network is composed of control packets and data packets, the VoIP gateway device converts the received data packets to, for example, a voice data stream while processing the control packets. In a VoIP call, an originating voice gateway quantizes an input audio stream into packets that are placed onto a packet network and routed to a destination voice gateway. The destination voice gateway decodes the packets back into a continuous digital audio stream that resembles the input audio stream. A codec uses a compression/decompression algorithm on the quantized digital audio stream to reduce the communication bandwidth required for transmitting the audio packets over the network.
