Fiber optic polarizer (FOP)

Polarizers are used as building blocks of optical waveguide devices. The fiber optic polarizer is an indispensable component of a coherent fiber-optic communication system or fiber-optic phase sensory system. Many fiber optic systems have operational characteristics that are highly dependent on the polarization of the light guided by the optical fiber. The state of polarization is particularly important in a device such as an optical fiber rotation sensor. In a polarized optical fiber rotation sensing system, drift errors due to changes in polarization are determined by the quality of the polarizer. Unpolarized light consists of wave vibrations in many directions perpendicular to the direction of travel. Polarizers filter out or block all vibrations, except those desired. Laser light can propagate along a waveguide in various ways. Two common modes of propagation are transverse-magnetic (TM) and transverse-electric (TE).
