Fiber optic patch cord
Fiber optic cables are utilized extensively in the telecommunications industry, as well as other industries, as a preferred transmission medium because of their ability to carry large amounts of data over long distances at high speeds. Optical fibers can be single mode fibers (typically employed in long-distance communication), which have only one strong propagation mode, or multi-mode fibers, in which light transmitted in the different modes arrives at different times, resulting in dispersion of the transmitted signal. Optical communication components, such as optical fibre transmitters and/or receivers, generally referred to hereinafter as optical transceivers, often need to be connected to other such components or optical fibre transmission cables. For example, an optical transceiver may have a connector port into which connector patch cord is plugged. Patch cords are often used in telecommunication systems where many cables are connected to sockets at the front end panels of equipment. In fiber optic installations, a fiber optic patch cable is used extending between fiber optic connectors.
