Tilt sensor

Tilt sensors are used in a variety of applications to detect the angular orientation of an object with respect to a reference, usually supplied by gravity. Many tilt sensors are of the electrolytic type. A tilt sensor is provided in survey instruments, aircraft, or automobiles, etc., to measure the tilt angle thereof. The tilt sensor includes a sealed container which is comprised of, for example, a top cover plate in the form of a circular disc which is provided with a recessed surface, a circular bottom plate, and a cylindrical body. Electrolytic tilt sensors are devices that provide output signals proportional to the angle or direction of tilt in conjunction with a corresponding electrical circuit. Electrolytic tilt sensors provide output voltage proportional to tilt angle and a phase indicative of tilt direction when configured in an appropriate electrical circuit. A typical electrolytic sensor includes a glass or ceramic envelope that is partially filled with a conductive fluid. The fluid moves in response to tilting of the sensor where the fluid is under the influence of gravity, such as with a carpenter's spirit level. Magnetic tilt sensors typically comprise a permanent magnet housed in a nonmagnetic case. Magnetic sensors detect the position of the magnet within the case, and the tilt angle is determined therefrom. Capacitive tilt sensors typically use conductive plates as part of the fixed element. A reference element moves in or out of the space between the plates in response to a tilt, changing the permittivity of the space between the plates, and hence, the capacitance. In general, tilt sensors can be classified into two kinds. One is the single axis tilt sensor, and the other is the dual axis tilt sensor. The single axis tilt sensor measures the slant of one direction, whereas the dual one estimates the slant of a plane.
