Force sensor

Force sensors are required in many mechanical equipments and aggregates for an accurate determination of pulling and/or pressing forces. The force sensor outputs an electrical signal which corresponds to the force measurement for further evaluating or controlling processes. Force sensors are commonly used in many applications, particularly in automotive vehicles and a variety of subsystems such as brake, suspension, transmission, speed control and air bag system. For example, a force sensor is typically installed in air bag systems mounted on a car so as to provide safety for a passenger in case of a collision. The force sensor is able to measure the weight of a passenger when he is seated on the seat. This force sensor generates a signal for controlling inflation of the air bag system. Many force sensors use piezoresistive measuring elements to convert a mechanical stress into an electrical resistance change. Piezoelectricity is the phenomenon in which certain crystalline substances develop an electric field when subjected to pressure forces or, conversely, exhibit a mechanical deformation when subjected to an electric field.
