Ultrasonic flow meter

An ultrasonic flow meter uses ultrasonic waves to function as a flow meter that measures the flow volume of a liquid flowing through a pipe. Ultrasonic flow meters have many advantages over other methods of determining flow rates. Ultrasonic flow meters can continuously measure the flow rate, while other methods generally measure average flow rates. In addition, ultrasonic flow meters are obstructionless and work with non-conductive fluids. Ultrasonic flow meters are known in various areas of flow measurement, including the medical field in which the flow of gas expired by a patient is measured. Ultrasonic flow meters are generally configured, such that a generated ultrasonic wave is caused to propagate through a fluid flowing through a tubular path of the ultrasonic flow meter. The technique is well known and employs transducers that transmit sound waves between each other, with the transit time measured upstream and downstream serving as the basis for calculating the flow. Ultrasonic flow meters have a pair of transducers that are placed on either side of the flow path of a fluid flowing through a conduit. The principle used to detect flow rates is that the transit time of an ultrasonic packet will increase in the upstream and decrease in the downstream path. The amount by which the transit time changes is directly proportional to the flow rate. In typical ultrasonic flow meters, the velocity of the fluid flowing through the tubular path is determined on the basis of the difference between the rate of propagation of the ultrasonic wave that propagates from an upstream to a downstream and that, which propagates from the downstream to the upstream. A typical flow meter system includes the transducers and an electronic controller powered by a standard power supply. The controller controls the transducers and responds to the signals output by the transducers to calculate the flow rate.
