Fiber optic sensor
As fiber optics become more prevalent, various types of optical sensors have become increasingly common. The use of optical fibers to sense deflections, displacements, temperatures and other physical conditions is well known. Fiber optic vibration sensors have been used in a wide variety of applications, from monitoring machinery conditions to detecting motion for alarm systems. Fiber optic sensors have been configured as passive devices with high sensitivity and excellent reliability in high temperature and pressure environments. Fiber optic based acoustic sensors are promising alternatives to conventional electronic sensors due to their advantages of high sensitivity, large dynamic range, light weight, and compact size. Optical fiber sensor systems come in many configurations and have the ability to measure a wide range of material properties and environmental conditions. Interferometric fiber optic sensors in which the velocity, phase or wavelength of the propagating light is modified in response to sensed phenomena are employed in a variety of applications. For example, optical fiber gyroscopes are commonly employed to measure the rotation rate, such as the rotation rate of an aircraft. Fiber optic sensors may be multiplexed, and the sensor length may vary from microns to kilometers. Fiber optic sensor systems generally rely on varying the intensity of a light beam or upon measurements based on the wavelength of light. By varying the construction of the fiber optic sensor, a fiber optic sensor can detect a variety of physical phenomena, including acoustic, magnetic and electric energy. A fiber sensor can be embedded within the layers of the composite structure to determine strain and temperature. The purpose of embedding fiber optic sensors in materials is to accurately measure a specific material property at a specific location in the composite specimen.
