Dome camera

Today, remote controlled surveillance camera systems are commonly employed as a security measure. The cameras are normally used to generate a video image of an area under surveillance that is displayed to and/or recorded for use by security personnel. Dome cameras are mounted to a wall or to a ceiling structure where they may be observed by people within the area under surveillance. In a dome camera, a camera body is housed in a camera box attached onto a ceiling or the like through a camera base a so that it can turn and swing. A camera cover made of metal and formed hemispherically covers the camera body from the underside, and the camera cover has a shield function of hiding an inside electric circuit and simultaneously preventing unnecessary radiation produced from the electric circuit from being emitted outside. The dome camera uses a semiconductor image pickup element such as a CCD or a CMOS sensor. In the image sensor, a sensitivity of an infrared region is much higher than a visible light level. In order to obtain a color image, therefore, an infrared cut filter is provided on the front surface of the image pick-up element to cut unnecessary infrared rays. Some type of dome camera, including CCTV cameras underneath a dome-shaped housing, typically provides no pan, tilt, zoom or rotation functions. Speed dome cameras on the other hand are characterized by speedy pan, tilt, zoom and rotational orienting of the camera within a dome-shaped protective shield. High-end speed dome models offer functions such as day and night camera mode and weatherproof housings. Auxiliary illumination can be infrared for night or covert surveillance. Powerful external illuminators outside the speed dome can be used, but typically give wide and wasteful coverage, flooding a scene regardless of where the speed dome camera is pointed at any given time.
