Carbon monoxide (CO) detector
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless, tasteless poisonous gas which can be produced by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. Carbon monoxide can be present in dangerous quantities in a wide variety of different environments such as homes, automobiles, aircraft, submarines, coal mines and the like. The human body has generally a low tolerance for CO gas since a concentration of approximately 0.05% over an extended period of time or 1% for a few minutes could prove to be a fatal dosage for humans. Moreover, even a minor amount of carbon monoxide can be detrimental to human health. As a result of the increased concern over the dangers of carbon monoxide, many different types of carbon monoxide detectors are now currently available for sale to the public. Public awareness of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide in the home and continuing advances in carbon monoxide detection technology and reliability has greatly increased the number of carbon monoxide detectors installed in homes and offices. Carbon monoxide detectors typically include a detection circuit which triggers an audible alarm to alert occupants of the presence of the gas. The benefits of these devices typically derive from the fact that the occupants are alarmed of the presence of carbon monoxide which would not otherwise be detectable by the human senses. Existing types of carbon monoxide detectors can be broadly classified into one of four types according to the gas sensitive element employed: chemical, electrochemical, semiconducting or spectroscopic (infra-red). Carbon monoxide can absorb infrared radiation. Carbon monoxide detectors have taken advantage of this phenomenon to determine the differences between infrared radiation absorption in a test cell containing a gas to be tested and a reference cell containing a fixed composition of gas. The most popular carbon monoxide detectors for domestic use utilise a gas sensitive semiconductor; the resistance of a carbon monoxide detector changes upon exposure to a reducing gas.
