Biometric identification system
Biometric devices are becoming commonly accepted for user identification for computer and security systems. Biometric identification is the process of using one or more physical or behavioral features to identify a person or other biological entity. Biometric recognition systems generally involve recognition of a person by presentation of some physical characteristic of the person to a machine. In the area of personal identification, some chosen characteristic of a person is used to identify or verify that person's identity. A number of biometric identification devices already exist. These include fingerprint readers, hand geometry readers, iris imagers, retinal cameras, voice recognition, and face recognition devices. Biometric recognition systems have been shown to have value in various security applications including facility access control. Biometric identification is particularly useful because certain personal characteristics are substantially unique to each person and are difficult to reproduce by an impostor. Further, the recording and analysis of biometric data can be automated, thereby allowing use of computer controlled electronics and digital recording techniques. Biometric recognition can be used in "identification mode", where the biometric system identifies a person from the entire enrolled population by searching a database for a match. A system can also be used in "verification mode", where the biometric system authenticates a person's claimed identity from his/her previously enrolled pattern of biometric data. Biometric recognition systems may find applications in instance physical access to restricted areas or applications, and access to computer systems containing sensitive information used by the military services, intelligence agencies, and other security-critical organizations.
