Satellite radio
Satellite-based communication systems were developed mainly for the transmission of telephone conversations and television broadcasts. Now satellite-based communication systems are being used to transmit radio broadcasts. Satellite radio has the ability to improve terrestrial radio's potential by offering a better audio quality, greater coverage and fewer commercials. Stellite transmission of radio broadcasts allows listeners in cars, trucks, boats, and other vehicles to receive desired radio programming beyond the relatively limited geographic range associated with standard AM and FM radio broadcasting. The satellite-based direct radio broadcast system provides a number of advantages over existing satellite systems, such as the ability to provide portable services. A digital broadcast system uses a satellite direct radio broadcast system having different downlink options in combination with a terrestrial repeater network employing different re-broadcasting options to achieve high availability reception by mobile radios, static radios and portable radios in urban areas, suburban metropolitan areas, rural areas, including geographically open areas and geographic areas characterized by terrain having high elevations. Satellite broadcasts are classified into analog satellite broadcasts and digital satellite broadcasts, and set-top boxes which process the satellite broadcast signals and control the movement of the antenna are classified into analog set-top boxes and digital set-top boxes. In satellite radio systems, broadcast stations function to create, purchase or otherwise acquire program material, often referred to as "content" or "content material" and to broadcast such program material. In order to receive satellite broadcasts, a satellite broadcast receiver equipped with antenna is necessary for directly receiving radio frequency waves from satellites.
