Digital satellite receiver
In order to receive a satellite broadcast signal from broadcasting satellite (BS) or communications satellite (CS), it is necessary to use a satellite receiver and a satellite antenna. The satellit receiver system includes an outdoor microwave antenna which can be aimed at a satellite to receive a signal from a satellite. The signal received from the satellite is amplified by a low noise block converter (LNB) mounted in very close proximity to or on the antenna. The LNB down-converts satellite signals at high frequencies to signals at frequencies in the high megahertz range. An output signal from LNB is carried to a satellite receiver and decoder system, decoded and presented with a monitor device. Global positioning system (GPS) receivers use signals received from typically three or more earth-orbiting satellites to determine navigational data such as position and velocity. The GPS system uses a constellation of satellites which move around the earth on very precisely determined orbits. The satellites transmit radio frequency signals, containing navigation data and codes which make it possible to identify each satellite. These codes phase modulate a carrier frequency. A GPS receiver can receive the signals from several satellites simultaneously, precisely calculate its distance from each of the satellites, and deduce therefrom its precise position in latitude, longitude and altitude in a terrestrial frame. Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers normally determine their position by computing time delays between transmission and reception of signals transmitted from satellites and received by the receiver on or near the surface of the earth. Typical satellite receivers comprise a receiver member disposed in an interface card for coupling to computer facilities, such as the personal digital assistant (PDA) facilities, personal computers, notebook computers, etc., and for receiving remote signals and for sending the remote signals to the PDA facilities, the personal computers, the notebook computers, or the like.
