Antenna
An antenna is a resonant device that transmits or receives electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves in the microwave range are used in mobile telecommunication for the transmission of information. The transmitting antenna delivers an electromagnetic wave and the receiving antenna transforms the energy of the electromagnetic wave into a current to be processed by a receiving circuit. Generally, the features of antenna can be known by the parameters of operation frequency, radiation patterns, reflected loss, and antenna gain, etc. Antennas may also be characterized by their directivity, being either omnidirectional or directional. Antennas are widely used throughout the industrialized world to transmit and receive electromagnetic energy. The electromagnetic energy is typically used to carry some sort of signal which can be decoded to result in usable data. Typical uses of antennas are in data communications, radar, and navigation and guidance systems. The selection of a particular antenna configuration for a particular use is based upon the radiation pattern produced by the antenna. An antenna system is the combination of the electromagnetic radiation elements of an antenna, the feedline, the matching networks, the impedance circuitry, and an interface between electromagnetic space fields and the radio frequency input/output port of an RF transmitter or receiver device. When an antenna is receiving, the antenna transforms free space propagating waves by inducing a guided electromagnetic wave within the antenna. The guided electromagnetic wave is then fed into an integrated circuit which then deciphers the signal being transmitted. When an antenna is transmitting, the antenna receives the guided electromagnetic wave for transmission from a feed line and induces an electric field surrounding the antenna to form a free space propagating electromagnetic wave. Different types of antenna systems are valuable for certain applications which require specific physical and electrical characteristics.
