Reed switch

A reed switch is a mechanical electrical switch having a pair of ferromagnetic contacts in either a normally-open or normally-closed configuration. Reed switches include electrical contacts which are positioned to have a space or gap between them which can be selectively closed and reopened by relative movement of the contacts under the application of a magnetic energy, so as to establish electrical contact between them. Reed switches are commonly employed for sensing the position of a mechanism the movement of which is to be monitored, by providing a switched output in response to the passage or approach of an actuating magnet carried by the mechanism. Magnetic reed switches comprise two reeds made of magnetic material so that when magnetic field is applied the two reeds either contact each other or separate from each other to make or break a contact. When a permanent bar magnet passes a reed switch the contact between the reeds is either made or broken. Reed switches are typically used as proximity sensors for limit, safety, and security applications. For example, reed switches are used in level measuring devices wherein a float with a magnet therein moves up and down adjacent a reed switch in a fixed position. Reed switches have found wide use in shock sensors, particularly as safing sensors in automobiles.
