Motor starter

Some electric motors are started they can draw up to ten times their rated current for a limited period. Thus, motor starters are utilized to control the electric current supplied to the motor. A manual motor starter serves as a switching device which has a function for protecting a motor by interrupting power supply to the motor upon generation of a fault current in a section for starting or stopping the motor, such as an electric shortage, a ground fault and an electric phase deficiency. A motor starting switch may be employed to control the energization and de-energization of the motor start winding or start capacitor connection with an auxiliary winding. There are various types of electric motor starters depending on the structure of the electric motor to be controlled and their purpose of use and they comprise an equipment adapted for the electric motor to be started at each time. Solid state motor starers control the stopping and staring of electrical motors by gated semiconductor devices such as SCRs or other thyristors. Many electrical mechanical motor starters use bimetallic overload elements to protect a motor during startup and while the motor is running.
