Polarization rotator
Polarization rotators are a useful control device in an optical apparatus. Optical properties or parameters of light in an optical device or system may be measured for various purposes. The optical polarization is an important parameter of an optical signal in various optical systems. In optical fiber communication systems, polarization-dependent effects in fibers and other devices, such as polarization-dependent loss (PDL) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), can have significant impacts on performance and proper operations of optical systems. In an optical fiber, ultra-short pulses of light carry the signal. Because the optical fiber is not perfectly circular, the direction of the electric field, or polarization, splits into two components that propagate at different speeds, causing the pulse to spread, an effect referred to as polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Polarization state rotators rotate the polarization state of an input beam of electromagnetic energy by a predetermined angle. Rotators are employed in a variety of demanding applications including laser rods, electron linear accelerators, and three-dimensional stereovision video applications.
