Depolarizer

Optical information communication technologies have evolved as the technology of choice for backbone information communication systems due to their ability to provide large bandwidth, fast transmission speeds and high channel quality. Depolarizers are widely used in products that incorporate optical fiber, i.e. fiber optic gyroscopes, and play a major role in sensor technology. Because depolarizers can increase the performance and quality of a product containing optical fiber, depolarizers are important to fiber optic gyro systems. Specifically, because gyro error signals arise as a result of different polarization conditions of the individual light wave trains within the optical fiber, depolarizers can is be used to suppress gyro error. Optical depolarizers, optical combiners, and optical isolators are commonly used in optical communication systems and optical measurement systems. An optical depolarizer is designed to change a beam of completely polarized light or a beam of partially polarized light into a beam of depolarized light. Laser light transmitted through optical fibers is usually a polarized light because lasers and laser diodes are strongly polarized light sources. There are however some applications where the polarization of the light is not desirable. The purpose of the depolarizer is to transform the output of a polarized source, which has a high degree of polarization (DOP) and to reduce that degree of polarization to a very small value.
