Flatbed scanner
Image scanners are commonly used for scanning documents into computers. The most commonly used scanners are flatbed scanners. The flat bed image scanner is widely used today is a periphery equipment for scanning documents, books and pictures and for furnishing the scanned information to a computer to be processed. A flatbed scanner is a device capable of converting the printed data on a document into digital form for processing by the computer. The document that is to be scanned is fixedly placed on a transparent glass plate on the flatbed scanner and a movable scan head moves over the document and to make a scan that converts the printed data on the document into digital form. A typical flatbed scanner may include illumination and optical systems to accomplish scanning of the object. The illumination system illuminates a portion of the object, whereas the optical system collects light reflected by the illuminated scan region and focuses a small area of the illuminated scan region onto the surface of a photosensitive detector positioned within the scanner. The photosensitive detector used to detect the image light focused thereon by the optical system may be a charge-coupled device (CCD), although other devices may be used. A typical CCD may comprise an array of individual cells or "pixels," each of which collects or builds-up an electrical charge in response to exposure to light. The transparent glass plate of the flat bed image scanner is rectangular-shaped with a size larger than the document that is to be scanned. Reference marks are provided on the transparent glass plate that allows the user to place the document at correct positions. To allow the scan to cover the entire document, the scan should start at the upper/leftmost point of the document. In a flatbed image scanner, the moving-around carriage containing therein optical and photoelectric devices is connected with the circuit board through a flat flexible cable.
