Xenon lamp
A xenon lamp is a type of arc lamp. A xenon lamp may be a short arc lamp or a long arc lamp. In general, since the long arc lamp has a large luminous energy, it is used for lighting a wide space. On the other hand, the short arc lamp is similar to a point light source. A typical short arc lamp comprises an anode and a sharp-tipped cathode positioned along the longitudinal axis of a cylindrical, sealed concave chamber that contains xenon gas pressurized to several atmospheres. Short arc lamps provide intense point sources of light that allow light collection in reflectors for applications in medical endoscopes, instrumentation and video projection. Such a short arc lamp often is used as a light source for a motion picture projector. Continuous arc xenon bulbs provide bright, stable, daylight balanced light at power levels from a few watts up to tens of thousands of watts. The luminous flux of the xenon lamp reaches a stable level immediately after lighting, and the luminance thereof is extremely high. The xenon lamp has good rendering properties, and the color temperature and the molecular spectral distribution thereof are similar to that of sunlight. Xenon bulbs are widely accepted in architectural, entertainment, and medical applications. Xenon metal halide lamps have been finding greater and greater use in the lighting field recently, particularly in the automotive lighting field or any other field where a high brightness light source with instant-on capabilities is required.
