Torchiere lamp
Torchieres have become highly popular lighting devices in recent years, typically due to their low cost and bright yet soft lighting characteristics. Torchieres include a reflective bowl mounted on a pole exceeding the height of a normal adult. Typically the halogen torchiere lamp includes a supporting member, a housing, a bulb and a reflector. A tubular halogen light bulb is horizontally disposed inside the bowl where it cannot be seen by persons in the room, and the very bright light of the halogen lighting element is directed upward so as to reflect from the ceiling with the soft dispersed appearance of indirect lighting. A halogen torchiere lamp has an upward-facing lampshade mounted atop a long, upright stem. Most halogen torchiere lamps for home use have a double-ended, horizontally-mounted halogen bulb set within the lampshade. Halogen torchiere lamps are commonly equipped with electronic dimmers. The fundamental component of such a dimmer is a triac.
