Recessed lighting fixture

Recessed lighting fixtures are one of the various types of lighting fixtures used to provide light for rooms, such as in homes or offices. Recessed lighting fixtures typically mount a space over a ceiling so that the fixtures are not readily seen in a room. The fixture has an open end and mounts over an opening in the ceiling. Light passes from the recessed fixture into the room to not only brighten the room but to provide artistic qualities to a lighting scheme. Such fixtures provide light that not only brightens rooms, but provides artistic qualities to the lighting scheme. Recessed lighting fixtures accordingly maintain the fixture out of view, typically above a ceiling, while lighting a room. There are many designs available for mounting recessed lighting fixtures in a ceiling. Recessed light fixtures typically include a housing affixed to a ceiling structure, a trim mounted to the housing and disposed within a hole formed in the ceiling, and a lamp socket attached to the housing or trim. For recessed lighting fixtures, trims are used to hold gimbals which in turn retain the light bulb or socket. Trims also serve as the decorative elements that contact the ceiling, leaving nothing other than the trim, gimbal and bulb visible. A standard trim includes a laterally outwardly projecting trim ring at its lower end for engaging the ceiling surface in order to cover the edge of a hole in the ceiling through which the trim extends. The recessed lighting fixture comprises a cylindrical housing which is received through an opening in a ceiling into the space over the ceiling. The lamp housing is held in place in the ceiling by a type of bracket frequently referred to as a plaster frame, which may also include an electrical junction box within which wiring connections for the lamp are made. A reflector is received in the housing. A socket or lamp holder typically mounts to an upper end of the housing for receiving a light bulb which extends through an opening in the reflector. The interior surface of the reflector directs light from the light bulb through the open end of the housing into the room below the ceiling. In a typical installation, bar hangers are secured to parallel rafters and a plaster frame is supported by the bar hangers. The cylindrical housing is mounted on the plaster frame.
