Light socket (lamp socket)
A lamp socket is designed to accommodate a light bulb, and consists of three major elements including an outside framework, typically cylindrical in form, and made of plastic or other non-conductive material; a conductive metal cylinder lining the inside circumference of the outside framework, with screw-like threads matching those of the size light bulb which is to be inserted therein, this portion is commonly known as the "socket base"; and a small circular and cone-shaped or rounded contact point at the very base and in the center of the light bulb socket, which is knownn as the "socket pin". The standard light socket is a basic fixture in virtually every home and office. These are commonly used in standing floor lamps, light fixtures as well as in table top or desktop lamps. A regular light socket is generally comprised of a socket body having a spiral thread for mounting the base of a lamp bulb, and two metal contact plates, namely, the center metal contact plate and the side metal contact plate respectively fastened to the socket body for connection to a respective conductor of the electric wire. Lamp bulb sockets are typically one of two types. Axial lamp sockets include a housing body that extends directly behind the lamp. The housing body directs the wires connected to the lamp bulb socket away from the lamp bulb socket. Right angle light sockets include a housing body that extends behind the lamp and then at a right angle away from the lamp. The "right angle" housing directs the wires connected to the lamp bulb socket away from the lamp bulb socket at a right angle to insertion axis 190. The common electrical sockets used to hold incandescent light bulbs have a number of concave threads in a metallic shell. The demand for increased energy conservation has stimulated the development of compact electric discharge lamps, such a fluorescent lamps, as screw-in replacements for the standard incandescent bulb. As a result, the use of the compact fluorescent lamp has resulted in a substantial savings at a reduced operating and maintenance cost. In order to hold an electric light bulb or tube having a screw-threaded base, a typical lamp socket includes a receptacle in which a screw-threaded collar is located. A motor vehicle is equipped with a variety of lamps including driving lights, side lights, stop lights, etc. These lamps are designed for different purposes, or for use at different conditions. An automotive vehicle lamp is generally comprised of a lamp socket, and a lamp bulb installed in the lamp socket.
