Fluorescent lighting fixture

There are many types of lighting fixtures which include recessed fixtures, surface mounted fixtures, track-light fixtures and the like. Most of the known light fixtures use incandescent light sources therein. However, incandescent light sources have a short life and are inefficient. Also, incandescent light sources tend to generate a large amount of heat which is given off into the surrounding area. Consequently, incandescent light sources tend to be energy consumers and wasters. As energy savings have become more and more important, an increasing number of fluorescent lamp has been used. Fluorescent lighting has been commonplace especially in commercial, institutional and industrial applications, the energy efficiency of fluorescent fixtures coupled with relatively low fixture cost causing fluorescent lighting to be the lighting of choice in most home and office situation. In contrast with an incandescent light which produces light by heating of a filament, a fluorescent light produces light by exciting atoms of a gas. Fluorescent lamps typically have a transparent glass envelope enclosing a sealed discharge space containing an inert gas and mercury vapor which, when subjected to a current provided by electrodes, ionizes to produce radiation having primary wavelengths of 185 nm and 254 nm. This ultraviolet radiation, in turn, excites phosphors on the inside surface of the envelope to produce visible light which is emitted through the glass. Fluorescent lamps are higher by 3 to 5 times in lighting efficiency compared with incandescent lamps, and the life expectancy is also much longer. Therefore, fluorescent lamps are being used as an important artificial lighting source. A fluorescent lighting fixture housing includes a space for housing a ballast transformer, a metal reflector, tube socket members and wiring between the ballast transformer and the tube sockets. Fluorescent lighting fixtures are widely used in business, factory and residential lighting applications. Presently, the most common type of fixture is the modular 2' by 4' fixture recessed as part of a suspension system or surface mounted on a ceiling.
