Flashlight
Flashlights are used to cover a variety of household, workplace and recreational needs. The primary function of flashlights is to provide a convenient portable storable light source which is capable of projecting light in a particular direction. Flashlights generally include a battery chamber having an end cap for retaining one or more batteries, a light bulb electrically connected to the one or more batteries and a reflector for reflecting light from the light bulb in a particular direction. Flashlights include one or more dry cell batteries and in certain designs the batteries are arranged in series in a battery compartment of a barrel or tube which acts as a handle for the flashlight. Electrical energy from the batteries is generally conducted to a lamp or bulb at the front end of the flashlight through a switch mechanism positioned between the batteries and the lamp. Flashlights typically have an external switch used to turn the flashlight on and off. Various switches have been used on flashlights, including push-button switches, sliding switches, twist-on/twist-off switches, dial switches, and many others. These switches are generally mechanically actuated by the user's finger of thumb. A parabolic mirror or reflector is located within the head, with the filament(s) of the bulb positioned at the focal point of the mirror. The mirror directs rays of light from the filament forward in a parallel direction, creating a useful beam. For many years, flashlights have used batteries, specifically, dry cells, to power an incandescent bulb. More recently, with the development of light emitting diodes (LEDs), in some flashlights the incandescent bulb has been replaced by an LED. The common flashlights can be classified into focusing flashlights and unfocusing flashlights depending on whether the flashlights can focus or not. The focusing flashlights generally perform the focusing by rotating the housing head or the front cover to allow the luminous point of the bulb and the focus of the parabolic reflector to coincide.
