Aquarium lighting

The aquarium decorative illumination is used to display species of fish and other aquatic life in a way that they can be closely observed by a viewer in a convenient manner. Most such aquariums include some lamp or lighting means to illuminate the tank so that fish in the tank and their movements are readily visible. Such lighting means is preferably of relatively low wattage rating to minimize power consumption and to avoid generating excessive heat. Aquarium lighting systems include light sources using fluorescent, incandescent, metal halide or light emitting diodes. These systems can be classified into two types. An aquarium lighting system may contain a housing, light source within said housing, and means of power supply or connection to power supply. Conventional aquarium lighting systems use 120 volt fluorescent or incandescent light bulbs which are typically carried by a tank cover to provide overhead lighting for the aquarium. Illumination systems based on LEDs have been developed and used. Light emitting diodes are known which, when disposed on a circuit, accept electrical impulses from the circuit and convert the impulses into light signals. LEDs are energy efficient, they give off virtually no heat, and they have a long lifetime. In some aquarium lighting systems, optical fibers as light sources are utilized.
