RFID reader
Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology that incorporates the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to uniquely identify an object, animal, or person. Radio frequency identification (RFID) systems generally consist of one or more RFID readers and a plurality of RFID transponders, which are commonly termed credentials. An RFID reader operates by writing data into the tags or interrogating tags for their data through a radio frequency (RF) interface. The RFID reader transmits an RFID interrogation signal. An RFID marker or tag receives the transmitted RF interrogation signal and responds with a reply signal that includes identification information and other data as known in the art. The RFID reader receives the RFID marker's reply signal and recovers the relevant information contained within the signal. Each reader is capable of receiving information from RFID tags, with each tag typically being associated with an object or person. A tag may be affixed to or embedded in an object with which it is associated, or be part of a badge, card, or token given to a person. RFID readers are typically deployed where it is desired to control or to receive information about objects or persons bearing or associated with RFID tags. For example, readers may be deployed so as to cover entrances and exits, inventory control points, transaction terminals, and the like. A reader interrogates each tag to learn the tag's identity, uploads information from that tag, and then repeats the process with each of the remaining tags in sequence. During interrogation, the reader forms and transmits RF waves, which are used by tags to generate response data according to information stored therein. The reader also detects reflected or backscattered signals from the tags at the same frequency, or, in the case of a chirped interrogation waveform, at a slightly different frequency. Signals conveyed between the tag and the reader allow the reader to sense information on the tag.
