RFID label

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is being used increasingly as a means to identify goods at a distance, without requiring physical contact or even line of sight access to the goods. A typical RFID system has a passive RFID label having circuitry therein and a separate RFID reader. RFID uses radio frequency signals to acquire data from RFID tags within range of an RFID reader. The RFID reader energizes the RFID label circuitry by transmitting a power signal. The power signal may convey data which is stored in memory incorporated in the RFID label circuitry. In response to the power signal the RFID label circuitry may transmit a response signal containing data stored in its memory. RFID labels use a transceiver or a transponder which is placed on the item being tracked. The label transmits encoded data on a selected frequency and the RF signal is received by an antenna. The RF signals generated by these labels can be read at a distance from the receiving antenna. The RFID reader receives the response signal and interprets the data contained therein. The data is then transmitted to a host computer for processing. RF identification labels are generally categorized as either passive or active, based upon the power source used to power the label. Passive RF labels do not contain an independent power source. They rely solely on the power from an externally supplied RF carrier to supply all of the label's power requirements. The use of radio frequency (RF) identification labels overcomes many of these limitations and provides additional advantages over optical labels. One advantage of RFID labels is that line of sight is no longer required to read the label. Using radio frequencies enables RFID labels to be read even when line of sight is not present between the RFID label and the RFID reader. Since there is no requirement to have a direct line of sight between the RF label and the receiving antenna, an obscured RF labeled item can still be easily read.
