Transformer
Transformers are passive electrical devices that transform alternating or intermittent electric energy in one circuit into energy of a similar type in another circuit, commonly with altered values of voltage and current. A transformer typically includes two or more inductively coupled windings that effect the transfer of electric energy from one circuit to another with a change in voltage, current, phase, or other electric characteristic. Transformers are used in many different electrical devices Power transformers are employed within power supply systems for providing rated voltage and current to electric and electronic devices while isolating those devices from the AC current mains. Power generation and distribution systems use current transformers at numerous locations throughout the system as the primary sensor to monitor the current flowing through critical assemblies. A current transformer is used to deliver to electrical measuring and controlling devices a representation of the line current. The current transformer monitors a current that passes through an electrical apparatus such as a power transformer, a generator, or a circuit breaker. An isolation transformer is a transformer designed to provide magnetic or flux coupling between one or more pairs of isolated circuits, without introducing significant coupling of low frequency signals between them, such as either significant conductive or electrostatic coupling. A piezoelectric transformer is a mechanical-electrical transforming device which generates mechanical vibrations utilizing a piezoelectric effect and produces a voltage to be fetched therefrom. In RF circuitry, transformers tend to be implemented as surface mount devices or coupled planar spirals formed directly on the surface of an RF substrate. One type of RF transformer is known as a coupler, or power divider, which is used to provide low frequency impedance matching between the input circuit and the output circuit. The transformer serves for transforming the power sources or voltages in an electronic circuitry system so as to meet various demands for different power sources and voltages. The ratio of input voltage to output voltage in a particular transformer device is generally determined by the number of turns in the primary coil as compared to the secondary coil.
