Rotary encoder

Rotary encoders are used in many cases for those apparatuses as electronic devices that output digital signals of rectangular waveforms. Rotary encoders are the sensor of choice for generating a digital output to accurately measure rotational motion. Optical encoders are used to detect the rotation angle or, respectively, a length and a direction of a rotary movement or, respectively, linear movement of moving bodies. Encoders are often attached to high performance spindles in systems such as high precision machine tools and laser scanners. They are used to measure rotational parameters such as shaft angle position, velocity and direction of rotation. Rotary encoders are commonly used for measuring the rotational movement of a rotatable body, in particular, a shaft, over one or several revolutions. The data characterizing the rotational movement of the rotatable body can be acquired incrementally or absolutely. When the rotary encoders are associated with racks and tooth gears or with threaded spindles, they can be used for measuring the linear movement. Particularly, the photoelectric rotary encoder is widely used in various fields of industrial machinery such as in a robot and machine tool, as a sensor that detects a position and a rotational speed of a motor and transmits information to a controller.
