Permanent magnet
Permanent magnets are made of a material which can produce magnetic fields without applying electric power, has a high coercive force, and has a high residual magnetic flux density. The use of permanent magnets to produce and maintain magnetic fields of predetermined characteristics has found wide-spread application throughout varied areas of technology. Strong magnets include electromagnets and permanent magnets. An electromagnet capable of producing a large magnetic field is cumbersome and requires a very large power supply. Permanent magnets exist of relatively compact size that are capable of producing large magnetic fields. Permanent magnets offer numerous advantages over electromagnets, the most prominent of which is the creation of a magnetic field without electrical energy, or an external power source. Permanent magnets containing one or more rare earth elements and transition elements are well known for use in a variety of applications ranging from household electrical appliances to peripheral console units of large computers. For example, magnets have been used in motors and generators for aircraft and spacecraft systems. Magnets have also been widely used in actuators, inductors, inverters, magnetic bearings, and regulators for flight control surfaces and other aircraft components. The demand for permanent magnets that meet high performance standards has grown in proportion to the demand for smaller, higher efficiency electrical appliances. Typical permanent magnets include alnico magnets, hard ferrite magnets and rare earth element (transition metal magnets). In particular, good magnetic performance is provided by rare earth element--transition metal magnets such as R--T—B, R--Fe--B and Nd--Fe--B permanent magnets. In an R--Fe--B rare earth permanent magnet, from among rare earth permanent magnets, Nd, which is a primary element, exists in greater abundance than Sm and a great amount of Co is not utilized so that material costs are lessened while the magnetic characteristics far exceed those of rare earth cobalt magnets and an R--Fe--B rare earth permanent magnet is therefore an excellent permanent magnet.
