Chip inductor
Chip inductors are widely used as high frequency filters for eliminating radiation-noises from digital equipment, such as computers. In order to achieve a high-density surface mounting of parts onto a printed circuit board using a chip mounter, manufacturers have progressively reduced the size and thickness of electronic part chips, such as resistor elements, capacitors, etc. Many digital and analog circuits, including high-capacity memory devices, high-level microprocessors and operational amplifiers, have been successfully implemented in silicon based integrated circuits (ICs). These circuits typically include active devices such as bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and field effect transistors (FETs), diodes of various types, and passive devices such as resistors and capacitors. The requirement of smaller, more complex, and faster devices operating at high frequencies, such as wireless communications devices and Bluetooth RF transceivers, has also resulted in an increased demand for small size inductors. These small wireless communication devices and Bluetooth RF transceivers contain semiconductor chip packages and semiconductor dies with power and low noise amplifiers that require small size, high quality factor (Q) inductors for use in the resonance and matching circuits. Chip inductors are useful or desirable in various microelectronic circuits because of their small size and the ability to use pick and place manufacturing techniques for fabrication. An inductor for use in a high frequency filter is required to have a large inductance and a low resistance. In general, inductance is proportional to the square of the winding number of a coil and is inversely proportional to the length of the coil. A wire-wound chip inductor comprises a wire holding member having a core portion with a wire wound therearound, and flange portions and projecting from both ends of the core portion in the axial direction, and a magnetic plate attached to the wire holding member to connect the flange portions and thereto.
