Electronic oscillator

An oscillator is a circuit that outputs a periodic signal. Oscillating circuits play a central and increasingly important role in digital and analog electronic systems. Digital devices require precise system timing, a function provided by oscillators and similar timing sources. Oscillators, clocks and timers are essential to the performance of most modem electronic devices. Examples of devices that use oscillators, clocks and timers include digital timepieces, computers, televisions, cordless telephones, cellular phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and etc. A high frequency oscillator is used for a digital information communication network and so forth. Since the frequency stability is required, a crystal oscillator is used as a high frequency oscillator. A crystal oscillator uses the mechanical resonance of a physical crystal of piezoelectric material to create an electrical signal with a very precise frequency. A voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is a circuit that generates an oscillating signal at a frequency proportional to an externally applied control voltage. Voltage controlled oscillators are very important for applications such as processor clock generation and distribution, communications, system synchronization, and frequency synthesis. The voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is a key building block in phase-locked loops, clock recovery circuits, and frequency synthesizers. A phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit is a type of control loop in which both the phase and frequency of a local oscillator is maintained close to the phase and frequency of an external reference signal. Phase-locked loops (PLLs) have been widely used in high-speed communication systems because PLLs efficiently perform clock recovery or clock generation at a relatively low cost. One of the key circuits in a PLL is a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The VCO in a phase-locked loop (PLL) uses feedback to provide an accurate and stable clock reference signal for other circuits. The frequency of oscillations generated by a VCO is controlled by an externally applied control voltage.
