Electrical conduit

Electrical conduit acts as passageway for electrical wires which connect one electrical service box to another. Electrical conduit forms the backbone of the wiring system in many buildings, both commercial and residential. Where electrical cables and particularly communications cables are placed underground, conduit is frequently employed to permit the cables to be readily installed and removed for repair and replacement. Wire is typically routed through conduits and, when the direction of the wiring must change, a fixture is used wherein the wiring is accessible for manipulation by an electrician. Typically, these fixtures are boxes made from metal or PVC and are formed with a removable plate to allow entry into the box. An electrician may then manipulate the wiring within the box. Electrical conduit is generally made of tubing which is threaded at both ends so that threaded fittings can be threaded onto the ends to secure the electrical service boxes. Flexible electrical conduit is frequently used in residential and commercial wiring in order to satisfy building codes, and because of the versatility imparted by the flexible nature of the conduit. Electrical circuits in building structures typically include junction boxes where conductors from several circuits are connected together, and switch boxes where circuit switches are installed. In order to prevent the wire from being pulled free at any of these locations, the electrical conduit may be secured to the junction box and any fixture along the way. The junction box can be a variety of electrical enclosures such as an outlet box, transformer enclosure, circuit panel, lighting fixture. Similarly, the conduit can be rigid or flexible, or could be hose, other tubing capable of routing electrical wire, or cable. An electrical conduit connector provides a mechanical connection of the conduit to the electrical box or panel. Metal conduit can be of several varieties, including electrical metallic tubing (EMT), intermediate metallic conduit (IMC) and rigid conduit. Such conduit comes in standard lengths and can be secured in place and bent to form corners.
