Manan's multi-band wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) is designed to overcome lost dynamic range associated with hearing loss. It separates sound into 10 or 12 frequency bands, and adjusts the gain in these individual bands according to the wearer's residual dynamic range still available. Within individual bands, this processing mimics the nonlinear compression function of the outer hair cells in a normal cochlea or inner ear. It provides greater amplification to softer sounds and less for louder sounds. Thus, for both soft and loud sounds, the loudness that hearing aid wearers will perceive will be similar to that of normal hearing persons. As a result, this algorithm helps recover the reduced dynamic range of the impaired ear to as close as possible to the normal range.

For typical sensorineural hearing losses, hearing aids need to compensate not only for reduced hearing, but also for the reduced dynamic range. Many hearing impaired persons can't hear soft sounds, but their ability to hear loud sounds would be similar to that of normal hearing persons.
