KVM switch

Keyboard, video and mouse (KVM) switches are devices that allow multiple computers to share the same keyboard, mouse, and video monitor. The arrangement of computers, a peripheral switch, and user stations is typically referred to as a computer switching system. In many computer switching systems the peripherals at each user station comprise a keyboard, a video monitor, and a mouse. A user typically communicates with a personal computer via peripherals that serve as computer-user interfaces. Standard cables connecting each peripheral to the computer are about four feet long and the cables are used to couple one set of peripherals to one computer. A peripheral switch typically responds to control information, provides status information, provides some type of security process, and passes data between user stations and computers. Keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switches are used to connect several computers or servers to a set of input/output (I/O) devices (i.e. keyboard, mouse, and monitor), so that the same set of I/O devices can be used for each computer or server via switching their respective I/O signals. The KVM switch is connected between the input/output devices and the plurality of computers and, simultaneously, functions so that connection of the input/output devices to only any one of the plurality of computers can be active. KVM switches have the advantages of reducing equipment cost, decreasing power consumption, and conserving space. By using the KVM switch, a user can selectively utilize one computer among the plurality of computers.
