DSL, ADSL modem
Digital subscriber line (DSL) is a popular technology for providing high-speed communications over existing telephone lines, without disturbing conventional voice telephony. A modem is used to communicate information from one location to another. Digital subscriber line (DSL) technology is often used to provide high bandwidth connections to homes using local loops. Typically, each home contains what is commonly referred to as a customer premises equipment (CPE). The CPE may in turn contain a modem which receives (and transmits) signals representing digital data stream encoded according to the ADSL specifications. DSL technology provides one approach to addressing the demand for high-speed telecommunications service. DSL technology enables modems, or other devices such as frame relay data service units (DSU's) to communicate rapidly large amounts of data. DSL modem elements permit high data rate transmission of data over the public switched telephone network (PSTN) at multiple megabit speeds using sophisticated signal processing techniques that permit voice and data to travel simultaneously over the same analog copper twisted pair wire. Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is one version of DSL technology that expands the useable bandwidth of existing copper telephone lines. A digital modem operable under the ADSL protocol is about 100 times faster than a conventional analog modem having data transfer rate of 56 Kbps. Upon starting a data communication, an ADSL modem performs an initialization with an ADSL modem in a reception side, in order to determine sub-carrier to be used for the data communication among sub-carriers configuring multi-carrier. The ADSL modem determines data amount to be allocated into each sub-carrier. Using ADSL technology, the existing telecommunications network can be transformed to fully and efficiently support voice, text, file transfer, high resolution graphics and multimedia service delivery to every user.
