RAID controller

Modern mass storage systems are growing to provide increasing storage capacities to fulfill increasing user demands from host computer system applications. Redundant array of independent disks (RAID) storage technology allows for the storing of the same data on multiple hard disks. Within a RAID system, varying levels of data storage redundancy are utilized to enable reconstruction of stored data in the event of data corruption or disk failure. RAID subsystems are configured such that each drive serves as the primary storage device for a first portion of the data stored on the subsystem and serves as the backup storage device for a second portion of the data. RAID storage subsystems typically utilize a control module that shields the user or host system from the details of managing the redundant array. The controller makes the subsystem appear to the host computer as a single, highly reliable, high capacity disk drive. In RAID subsystems, the storage controller device performs significant management functions to improve reliability and performance of the storage subsystem. The RAID controller provides an interface between the RAID subsystem and the computer system. The RAID controller includes the hardware that interfaces between the computer system and the disks. The RAID storage management techniques improve reliability of a storage subsystem by providing redundancy information stored on the disk drives along with the host system data to ensure access to stored data despite partial failures within the storage subsystem.
