PDA

A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a palm-sized computer that works as a digital personal assistant. A personal digital assistant is typically comprised of a microprocessor or microcontroller (i.e., a small, processor that executes a program of stored instructions) coupled to a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen or display on which symbols, text or icons are displayed. PDAs have become indispensable to many people for their everyday needs, which include storing appointment information, managing electronic mail messages and word processing. Most personal digital assistants have electronic clocks and calendars by which a user can keep track of scheduled events or appointments, dates or other information which is entered into the PDA by means of character recognition software that reads signals that are input to the PDA through a pen or stylus contacting the screen. Personal digital assistants typically include internal memory for storing application programs and a local database. PDAs also include external connector used during synchronization procedure with an external database located in a local or remote PC. Information can also be downloaded into a PDA by way of a connection or coupling link between the PDA and a personal computer. Such a link is sometimes referred to as a hot link and might be realized by infrared signals between the PC and PDA or a hard-wired connection. Personal digital assistants generally have one extension port and one cradle port. The extension port is always posited on an upper side of the PDA for receiving a function-adding add-on card so as to extend the function of the personal digital assistant. The PDA also can electrically connect to other peripheral devices through the add-on card. The cradle port is used to fix the PDA on a cradle and electrically connects the PDA to the cradle.
