Notebook computer, laptop computer

Portable computers, also known as "laptop computers" or "notebook computers" depending on their sizes, are designed to be compact and used in different environments. Laptop or notebook computers are extremely popular for users who travel a lot or who need to take their computer to a remote work site. Reducing the size of the computer results in a reduced weight and a higher portability, substantially with the same performance as a desktop computer. A notebook computer comprises a body and a monitor pivotally mounted on the body by hinges. When the computer is closed, the computer monitor abuts the body and is fastened by a locking member. Laptop computers are basically comprised of a base structure and a display monitor pivotally attached to one another. Typically, a laptop or notebook computer comprises a clamshell formed by a main body that includes a keyboard unit and a display unit. All of the essential circuitry of the computer, such as the central processing unit (CPU), the power supply, and data storage devices (e.g., floppy or hard disk) are typically incorporated into the main body. A laptop computer is typically a single, integrated unit. All of-the elements of the computer are placed within one housing. The display housing typically includes a liquid crystal display (LCD) or other type of display. A keyboard unit having a plurality of keys is provided on the top face of the main body. Laptop computers generally have one or more interface slots on the backside or lateral sides to couple with connectors of different peripheral devices. When the interface slot is not in use, a lid to prevent external dusts from smearing the interface slot usually covers it. Laptop computers can be interfaced to a variety of peripheral devices such as printers, modems, storage devices, and local area networks. To interface the computer to these peripheral devices, a serial or parallel port is typically used. Other ports such as a Universal Serial Bust (USB) port can also be used. The power supply for laptop computers is generally provided by rechargeable batteries. Laptop computers are typically stored and transported in a carrying case. Laptop computer carrying cases are offered in a wide variety of sizes and with a variety of features. Notebook or laptop PCs may typically be connected to a device known as a docking station, which provides a connection to external devices that are too bulky to be readily transported along with the notebook computer.
