USB hard drive

Computers commonly use disc drives for memory storage purposes. Disc drives include a stack of one or more magnetic discs that rotate and are accessed using a head or read-write transducer. A typical hard disk drive is made of a stack of closely spaced rigid disks, with actuator arms that carry very small magnetic transducer heads that move radially within the said stack of disks. A hard disk drive which is an auxiliary memory device of a computer includes a hard disk that rotates at a high speed by a spindle motor installed inside the hard disk drive, and an actuator that has a magnetic head to record/reproduce data on/from a track of the hard disk. Since an internal hard drive and the storage media are all integrated in one unit, the computer can access the data stored in a hard drive by connecting up the hard disk controller cable and the power cable from inside a computer to the hard drive. But this way of connecting a hard drive to a computer usually requires opening up the computer and technical skill. External hard drive solves the problem of connecting a drive to a computer without opening up the computers. A computer system with a removable external hard drive allows a plurality of users to each have a separate hard drive with the respective user's applications and data. The external hard drives attach to a computer via one of the common I/O ports on a computer: USB, Firewire or PCMCIA. Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a communications architecture that gives a personal computer (PC) the ability to interconnect a variety of devices using a simple cable. The USB interface was designed to be an easy-to-use interface for personal computers. When a peripheral device is "plugged-in" to a personal computer using the USB interface, the computer will auto-detect and auto-configure the device. The Universal Serial Bus interface can be used with a wide variety of different types of peripheral devices. The USB interface therefore eliminates the need for multiple I/O standards and it simplifies PC connectivity.
