Desktop computer
Personal computer systems in general have attained widespread use for providing computer power to many segments of today's modern society. Personal computers can typically be defined as a desktop computers, and portable computers such as the popular laptop computer. A desktop computer comprises a rectangular central processing unit (CPU) housing within which the motherboard, storage drives such as hard disk drives and removable media drives, and logic circuitry for controlling standard desktop peripheral devices such as keyboards and computer mice are housed. The desktop computer further includes a large monitor such as a liquid crystal display (LCD) that is separately place on the top of a desk. The electronic elements of a desktop computer, such as a motherboard, memory, central processing unit, various interface cards, data storage devices and the like, are installed in a housing compartment of a computer case. A desktop computer case has a rear side includes option card slots for one or more of the personal computer's standard option cards such as, for example, display controller cards, memory controller cards, or hard disk drive controller cards. They are made in compliance with commonly accepted bus standards including Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), Enhanced Industry Standard Architecture (EISA), and Industry Standard Architecture (ISA). In desktop computer systems, the input devices, such as a keyboard, a mouse, a digitizer pad, a microphone, a digital camera, and various other devices, are generally stand-alone devices, which may communicate with the computer system via hardwire or wireless technology. A power supply is required to receive external electric power and transform to the electric power needed for operation of the desktop computer. The desktop computer's power supply also requires a transformer and, because the internal power supply has heat-generating components. Desktop computers often include cases in the so-called "tower" configuration, with the case intended to sit in a vertical position on the floor under or adjacent the user's desk.
