Digital signal processor (DSP)

A digital signal processor (DSP) is a processor for executing digital signal processing. Digital signal processors (DSPs) are specialized types of microprocessors that are specifically tailored to execute mathematical computations very rapidly. DSPs can be found in a variety of applications including electronic data processing, high precision servo control, graphics various capabilities for work stations, robotics, image processing, process control, real time simulation and instrumentation, speech recognition and synthesis, and telecommunication capabilities such as PBX, modems and facsimiles. Digital signal processors are generally used for real time processing of digital signals. A digital signal is typically a series of numbers, or digital values, used to represent a corresponding analog signal. In addition, digital signal processor applications tend to be intensive in memory access operations and to require the input and output of large quantities of data. Digital signal processor architectures are typically optimized for performing such computations efficiently. A DSP is typically implemented on a silicon based semiconductor integrated circuit. As with microprocessors, the computing power of DSPs is enhanced by using reduced instruction set (RISC) computing techniques.
