DIMM memory

Computers and servers may use several types of memory modules such as dynamic random access memory (DRAM), synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM), or extended data out random access memory (EDO RAM. The modules are produced in a number of formats such as, for example, single in-line memory modules (SIMM's), or dual in-line memory modules (DIMM's) and fully buffered DIMM's. Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) single in-line memory module (SIMM) and dual in-line memory module (DIMM) are preferred implementations of semiconductor main memory in computer systems. A DIMM is a printed circuit board (PCB) on which a number of memory chips are mounted. While single inline memory modules (SIMMS) have memory units or DRAM chips mounted only on one side of their printed circuit boards (PCB) a dual inline memory modules (DIMMS) comprise memory units mounted on both sides of the printed circuit board of the modules. The data stored in DIMM will be lost if power supplied to the chips is interrupted. Many DIMMs therefore include battery packs mounted to them. The battery packs house batteries that provide backup power to the DIMM if the primary source of power is interrupted. DIMMs are widely used in mass storage devices such as redundant arrays of inexpensive disks (RAIDs). The memory capacity of a DIMM used in any particular device depends on the desired capabilities of the device. Suppliers of DIMMs have to maintain a sufficient inventory of DIMMs of diverse memory capacities. There are different types of dual inline memory modules (DIMM). An unbuffered DIMM does not contain buffers or registers located on the module. These unbuffered dual inline memory modules are typically used in desktop PC systems and workstations. A registered DIMM comprises several additional circuits on the module. egistered dual inline memory modules either with ECC or without ECC are used for SDR, DDR and DDR-2. Small outline DIMM (SO-DIMM) is an enhanced version of standard dual inline memory modules and is used in laptops and in some special servers.
