Serial port card
In many system architectures, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) generally communicate to peripheral devices through a serial communication link. This serial communication link is referred to as the "serial port". Serial communications are in nearly universal use as a simple technique for communicating between different computer processors. Many serial interface devices, also called serial input/output (I/O) ports, arrangements are known in the field of electronic circuits and systems. Serial port communications are commonly used in computing devices or computing systems. A computer system includes a central processing unit for controlling the entire operation of the computer system, a read only memory for storing an operating program of the central processing unit therein and a random access memory for storing work data of the central processing unit therein. An input/output controller for performing data communication with external peripheral equipment and other computer systems is also provided. A typical serial port requires a three-pin interface, whereas a parallel interface may use as many as 18 pins (for a 16 bit interface). These serial ports are generally bi-directlonal, and typically include three signals: clock, shift-gate, and bidirectional data. The serial port allows various modules of host adapter, to communicate with the support circuit through the single serial port pin. The serial port also allows software on a host processor that is connected to the host adapter by a system bus to communicate with resources in the support circuit. The physical connection to the serial port in a computing device or system is established by hardware such as direct cabling, modems, network interface devices, and other transmission devices. The serial port is generally used in cases where the data rate requirement is low. The advantage of using the serial port over the use of some sort of parallel interface is the efficient use of package pins for the communication function.
