PC card (PCMCIA card)

A PC card is a peripheral device that can add a wide variety of capabilities to computers including memory, mass-storage, LAN, fax/modem and wireless communications. A PC card is detachably installed and used for information processing devices, such as a personal computer (PC), to process a variety of information of characters, voices or images, and also used for an increase in ability of a variety of processes and an expansion in processing function for the information processing devices. PC cards are usually constructed in accordance with standards of PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card Industry Association). The PCMCIA standard requires that all PC Cards have the same length and width and that each card connect in a PC Card adapter slot using a standard 68 pin connector. The PCMCIA standard currently defines three types of PC Cards. Type I cards are limited to a thickness of 3.3 mm and are used principally as memory cards, including RAM cards, ROM cards and DRAM cards. Type II PC Cards can be up to 5.5 mm thick and are large enough to include I/O port connections, and thus most LAN (local area network) adapters and modems are type II PC Cards. Type III cards can be up to 10.5 mm thick and are typically used for products that require moving parts such as hard disks. PC cards includes a small printed circuit board (PCB) encased in a rugged housing, and are produced according to a variety of form factors. Each PC card typically includes a pin/socket-type connector located at one end of the housing that facilitates convenient pluggable connection of the PC card to a host system. The PC card connector and data interchange formats are standardized. Mechanical and electrical standards have been established to ensure proper connection of PC Card to host. A PC card connector is commonly disposed in a notebook computer or another compact electrical device for electrically engaging with a PC card. The PC card such as a network card, a memory card, or a video card can be inserted into or ejected from the PC card connector.
