CompactPCI adapter card
The CompactPCI standard is an adaptation of the PCI specifications for industrial and/or embedded applications requiring a more robust mechanical form factor than desktop PCI. The PCI (Peripheral Connection Interface) bus is one popular example of a computer bus. However, PCI bus systems are not physically well-suited for environments that require zero downtime for reconfiguration or upgrades. The CompactPCI bus specification was developed to define a ruggedized version of the PCI bus for use in high reliability and availability systems. Compact PCI is a high level bus structure/standard for industrial computers. The specifications thereof are consistent with that of the PCI bus standard, but its mechanical specifications are different. The CompactPCI standard uses industry standard mechanical components and high performance connector technologies to provide an optimized system. In a CompactPCI bus system, the bus is part of a powered backplane, and specialized circuit cards with staggered pins for the orderly application of power are coupled into the CompactPCI bus by insertion of the cards into slots on the backplane. A CompactPCI system is comprised of one or more CompactPCI bus segments. Each CompactPCI bus segment consists of one adapter slot and several peripheral slots. A CompactPCI backplane often incorporates the CompactPCI bus segments for communication and data transfer purposes. The CompactPCI bus uses a gas tight, high density pin-and-socket connector which meets the IEC-1076 international standard. This connector has a number of advantages, all of which are favorable to the use of the CompactPCI bus in industrial environments. CompactPCI backplane slots for CompactPCI boards may be implemented with one or more connectors. Backplane connectors are designated as P1 through P5 corresponding in location to the CompactPCI board's connectors J1 through J5.
