Car navigation system
A car navigation system is used to guide a vehicle to a destination set even if the driver does not know a map to the destination. A car navigation system provides a driver with guidance on the direction to proceed by speech or display when the vehicle approaches an intersection. The navigation system is widely used which uses a combination of a global positioning system for measuring the location of a mobile station making use of radio waves transmitted from an artificial satellite and map information to display the current location of a vehicle on a map and navigates a user to the desired destination. Generally, a car navigation system obtains coordinates of a current vehicle location using navigation messages transmitted by a plurality of GPS satellites, matches the obtained coordinates of the current vehicle location to map data, searches for a travel path from the matched coordinates of the current vehicle location to coordinates of a destination of the vehicle through the map data, and guides the travel of the vehicle to the destination along the searched travel path. The global positioning system (the GPS) is a satellite navigation system including artificial satellites which radiate radio signals for positioning purposes. A map matching technique is used to display an accurate current position of a vehicle on a map. The current position is determined based on position information transmitted from the global positioning system (GPS) and matched by a map matching to a road on the map stored in a memory device. A typical vehicle navigation system includes a map-data storage device, such as a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or IC memory card, in which map data has been stored in advance; a display device; a GPS receiver; and sensors, such as a gyroscope and a vehicle speed sensor, for detecting the current location and orientation of the vehicle. A main function of the video display is to depict the desired map area and route on which the user's vehicle is traveling.
